All Courses 9 Topic 9 Receptive Labels
Receptive Labels

With receptive labels, we’re teaching a few skills at a time – labels, discrimination, and responding to “Give me…” or “Point to…”. Some kids need to be taught to “Give me..” before introducing labels and discrimination. For that step, use any label from the first set of 3 targets. Once they can give you 1 card (any of the 3) with 1 card out, add a second card and a third until they are discriminating in an array of 3. By this point, you’re still on the first set of 3 cards.

Now, when the child can discriminate in an array of 3 AND give the right label, we can start mastering targets. The easiest way to do this is with a Yes/no data sheet or target response list. You can still get percentage data on the overall responding on receptive labels but move them through targets as they master them.

Some kids can handle 5 receptive targets at a time and if they move through them quickly, a yes/no data sheet is the way to go. That way, you can introduce new targets as they master old ones without needing to wait for mastery of the whole set.
