Pre-requisite skills: some basic verbs, matching, 1-step instructions

This is a program that often needs to be tailored depending on the age and level of the student. Some kids breeze through these and others need more time.

1) Start with receptive trials with 3 cards out and asking the function question (eg:”What do you eat?”).

ALWAYS follow up the receptive response with a verbal response. So the response so “What do you eat” would be selecting the cookie and saying “cookie” (you can take data only on the receptive or on both).

2) Then, depending on the level of the learner, you can continue to progress through targets receptively or also include the reverse function – hold up the card and ask “What do you do with a cookie?” and the student says, “eat”.

3) If the student can handle more, you can include the intraverbal step – no pictures and only the questions “What do you do with a cookie” and “What do you eat?”

If a student goes through targets quickly, it’s easy to use a Yes No Data Sheet to track current targets. It can be taught in sets of 3 or as many as 10 at a time.
