How do I expand expressive language? If you have a student who is using 1-word phrases to communicate, how do you push them further?
1. Requesting – When students are motivated, you can push for 2+ word phrases – If they are requesting for items, you can require attribute+noun (e.g., big cookie, white plate, etc.) before they receive access to the item. If they are requesting actions, you can ask require a verb+noun (e.g., kick ball, drink juice, etc.)
2. Tacting – See data sheets attached. Verb+Noun, Attribute+Noun, Quantity+Noun
Some children communicate through gestalts (whole phrases at a time, communicating through echolalia). We’ve included a program for this (“Gestalt Language Phrases”). Here is more information on Gestalt Language Processing (GLP).
