Toilet Training Behaviors

There is more to toilet training than just learning to eliminate on the toilet. We should teach subtle behaviors such as:

Teach the student to use the toilet without removing pants and underwear (just pulling down)

Teach the student that when someone knocks on the door when they’re in the bathroom, they should respond (eg: “what”, “occupied”)

Teach the student that if the bathroom door is closed when they want to use it, they should knock before entering.

For a boy, teach the student to stand while urinating

For a boy, teach the student to keep butt cheeks covered with his pants while he’s standing to urinate.

Teach the student to close the door when using the bathroom.

Generalize to novel private bathrooms.

Generalize to public bathrooms.
