With emotional regulation, it is really important for students to recognize and label their emotions. This will help them identify (and alert others) when they are starting to lose control.

Once students can identify and label emotions (and complex ones!), teach them hierarchies. Sometimes it’s beneficial to draw out emotions on a scale or a thermometer to help students understand that there can be varying degrees of happy, sad, nervous, etc. (e.g., angry vs. furious)
