A Little Spot of…

Validating emotions is really important. As a student escalates (preferably if you can recognize antecedents), tell him, “It looks like you are feeling ___ right now.” The overall message should be that anxiety is normal. Everyone has anxiety and it is okay to feel the way that he feels.

A Little Spot of books/videos are a bit childish for older individuals, but really good at diving into emotions. There is a book series. Whether you watch the videos or read the books, be sure to stop for comprehension and role-play frequently. Create visuals from the book that can be used later as visual reminders and calming strategies.

**Remember to do all of this teaching when the student is calm and regulated. When he’s anxious or escalating, it is not the time to teach.
