All Courses 9 Topic 9 Measurement for Emotional Regulation
Measurement for Emotional Regulation

How do I know that these emotional regulation teaching procedures work?

Where’s the evidence?

Remember, throughout all of these teaching procedures, it is still extremely important to take data on the challenging behavior in question.

1.Define behavior

2.Measure it (baseline)

3.Treatment

4.Continue to collect data

5.Analyze data – Use data to make data-based decisions

If your teaching procedure is working, then you should see a decrease in negative behaviour. If not, then it could mean a number of things:

These procedures are not working for your student.

The function of behaviour was never properly determined

Replacement behaviours don’t match the function of behaviour (i.e., emotional regulation/calm down techniques are not the answer)

Instructors are not implementing them the way they were designed (procedural drift)

Behaviour is still being reinforced in some capacity
