We typically introduce this after teaching a few attributes.
We use real life items and vary items often (e.g., motivating items like mickey mouse, paw patrol characters, etc. + a tupperware container, cup, etc – Put Mickey in bowl, put mickey under bowl, etc.)
Once a student can place items according to prepositions, do it with him/herself – e.g., “Go under the table.”
Give behaviour specific praise, “Yes, that’s under!” and then if the student is verbal, ALWAYS follow up with “Where is it?” or “Where are you?” – You don’t need data on this step, but it’s just good teaching. (In theory, the student should always get this step correct as your behaviour specific praise is a prompt – “Great you are under! Where are you?”)
Teach “Advanced Prepositions” only after student has mastered “Prepositions”
