We sometimes call “Social Questions” “Little old lady questions!” – A little old lady comes up to your kiddo on the street and says, “Oh, he’s so cute!!! What’s your name, how old are you, etc.”
Parents are sometimes concerned that these answers are rote and not necessarily conceptualized. My response is “That’s okay for now.” Most neurotypical two and three year olds also don’t really understand the concept of age, etc. These questions are literally put in place so that our learners can answer those little old ladies! Conceptualization will come with other programs that we implement.
Be sure to ask age-appropriate questions – no 3 year old should have to memorize their address or their phone number.
