In this context, we refer to Auditory Comprehension as the ability to listen to a direction and do the corresponding action on a worksheet. This is an extremely beneficial school readiness skill.
Target Objective: When presented with a worksheet activity and given auditory instructions (e.g., “Circle the one that flies”), the student will complete the task independently within 3 seconds.
Once learners have mastered the basics, then we typically use purchased curriculum to teach more advanced auditory comprehension skills.
Jean Gilliam DeGaetano has published some super books for this purpose.
Here is our teaching order:
- Coordinating Auditory Information – Level 1
- Processing Auditory Messages Exactly and Totally – Level 1
- Coordinating Auditory Information – Level 2
- Processing Auditory Messages Exactly and Totally – Level 2
- Following Auditory Directions
- Listening and Processing Auditory Directions – Level 1
- Listening and Processing Auditory Directions – Level 2
To teach students to listen to paragraphs/stories and answer questions about what they just heard, we use the following curriculum – also by Jean Gilliam De Gaetano:
- Listening, Understanding, Remembering, Verbalizing

- Listening and Remembering Specific Details
