All Courses 9 Topic 9 Foxx and Azrin Approach
Foxx and Azrin Approach

This is not typically our “go to” approach unless we’ve tried a schedule-based approach and it’s not working or unless the parents have read about this approach and prefer to have this implemented.

This method is 40 years old! and very intensive. It is evidenced-based, but our experience with the approach is that the accident procedure can scare very sensitive and/or anxious students a bit too much. Also, if you read the evidence, there is nothing documented about long-term follow ups (i.e., whether toileting was maintained after successful voids were mastered).

“Toilet training with informed consent” is a great link for parents that explains the approach.

If you are going to use this approach, here are some explanations and data sheets:

  • 0 Procedure Explained HERE
  • 1 Flkow Chart of the Bladder Training Sequence
  • 2 Toilet approach prompt
  • 3 dry pants procedure
  • 4 dry pants data sheet
  • 5 Brief Cleanliness Training Procedure
  • 6 Full Cleanliness Training Procedure
  • 7 Self initiations
  • 8 Prompts for Raising and Lowering Pants
  • 9 Increased Time Intervals between Dry
