All Courses 9 Topic 9 Interrupting
Interrupting

Interrupting is a common skill that needs to be addressed when teaching social skills. The most effective way that we have found to teach this is through video, social narratives, and lots and lots of role play.

Take data on frequency of interrupting either throughout the day, or during specific segments of the day. You will know if these videos and role play are effective if your data start to decrease.

There are some good videos on youtube – be sure to practice/role play: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=everyday+speech+interrupting

Other Teaching Strategies:

Use youtube videos or videos that you created to show students positive examples

Social Scripts / Social Narratives – write out in point form the “expected” socially appropriate way

Have students write it out or draw a picture

Demonstrate polite/expected and impolite/unexpected ways (make this fun) and have students tell you which is the “expected” behavior and which is the “unexpected” behavior

Role Play!!! – practice, video the students role playing, play the video back and give students feedback (mainly positive feedback), re-record
