Not everyone in this world blatantly asks for what they want! Lots of people use what we call indirect mands.

That is, people tend to say things like, “I’m thirsty” instead of “May I please have some water.”

Therefore, not only do you need to teach your learner to respond to requests from others, but you have to teach them to respond to indirect mands as well.
