All Courses 9 Topic 9 Toilet Training (Interval)
Toilet Training (Interval)

Prerequisite Skills: Instructional Control, First/Then Concept, Basic 1-Step Instructions

We usually use an interval procedure for toilet training (or at least start with it). This program includes a “Dry Pants Check,” but does not have an accident protocol. It could be added, if necessary, but we typically don’t start out with it.

Important: When you take the child to the bathroom on the interval, do not phrase it as a question like,”Do you need to go pee?” In order to teach initiations, we don’t want the student to become accustomed to being asked. Say something like “Time to pee” or “I want to go pee” and require the student to copy your model with an approximation (or for some students a picture exchange). If the student is verbal, do a transfer trial to get the echoic-to-mand transfer.

There is no one way to collect data. Here are some samples. Use the one that best suits your needs (i.e., what information do you want to know?)
