The use of visuals is very important in order to fade instructional control from an adult to something more permanent in the classroom.
Here are visuals that we use for our “school readiness” program.
Whole Body Listening – We use this terminology all the time with our students. It implies that not only do your ears need to be listening, but your body has to be turned towards the speaker, your eyes should be on the materials, etc.
The other behaviour cards can be used simply as a reminder to redirect behaviour, or they can be used as a reinforcement system. E.g., “Great job following the circle rules. Here’s a check mark.” (__ number of check marks = reward)
Here are even more visuals that can be used in the classroom, depending on your student.
Remember – Keep it simple! While visuals are good, if you use too many at once, you could overwhelm someone (both student and teacher!). Pick the ones that are most relevant to the individual and the easiest for the teacher to adapt to.
